Higginson-Henry Wildlife Management Area Trail - Morganfield Kentucky Hikes

Pleasant wooded ridgetops and ravines. This hike uses a variety of paths and forest tracks to follow the rolling terrain across most of the Higginson-Henry area. The ridgetops offer some limited views north and west, but there are no good overlooks or other special points of interest. This is attractive but simple forestland. The bottomlands are full of small, intermittent streams likely to be flowing in spring. There are also lots of wildflowers, turkeys, and deer and, according to the state, some gray foxes and coyotes. The loop starts and ends near Cap Mauzy Lake, an eighty-acre impoundment built by the army for use in training and now a favorite of local anglers. It was named for a former game warden. This is a popular horseback riding area, and the route has been well trod by four-footed users, making it generally easy to follow. Indeed, some of the trail, especially near the lake, is badly eroded. The farther you get from the lake, the narrower and more pleasant the paths become. The woods are closed to motorized vehicles.
